Abstract

Purpose – Digital technologies are reshaping how entrepreneurs identify, finance and scale green opportunities, yet the scholarship linking digital green entrepreneurship to renewable energy and climate outcomes remains fragmented. This study maps the intellectual structure, thematic evolution and SDG alignment of this emerging field.

Design/methodology/approach – A hybrid design combining bibliometric analysis and a PRISMA 2020-guided systematic literature review was applied to 176 Scopus-indexed journal articles (2013–2026). Performance analysis and science mapping followed the algorithms implemented in Biblioshiny (bibliometrix) and the network conventions of VOSviewer, covering annual growth, Bradford’s and Lotka’s laws, country collaboration, keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, trend topics and reference co-citation. Forty-three articles with an explicit energy (SDG 7) or climate (SDG 13) dimension were then synthesised qualitatively.

Findings – The field is young (average document age 2.45 years) and expanding rapidly (55.0% compound annual growth, 2018–2025), with 80.1% of output published from 2024 onwards. China dominates production (68 first-author articles) but shows low international collaboration (MCP ratio 0.18). Keyword co-occurrence reveals five clusters: twin transition and digitalisation; capabilities and circular innovation in SMEs; digital finance and low-carbon inclusive growth; green entrepreneurship in the digital economy; and an emerging energy startup and digital entrepreneurship frontier. Only 20 articles (11.4%) address energy explicitly and 36 (20.5%) address climate, indicating that SDG 7 remains under-researched relative to SDG 13.

Originality/value – The study offers the first combined bibliometric-systematic account of digital green entrepreneurship framed around SDG 7 and SDG 13, proposes an integrative enabler-mechanism-outcome framework, and sets out a research agenda for energy-focused digital venturing.
