Abstract

The growing challenges of agricultural resource depletion, escalating production costs, environmental degradation, and rural economic vulnerability have emphasized the importance of transitioning toward economically viable and sustainable agricultural production systems. This study develops an integrated economic evaluation framework to assess the contributions of sustainable agricultural practices toward enhancing farm productivity, resource-use efficiency, profitability, and rural livelihood development in Pakistan. The research examines a farm-level dataset comprising 2,400 agricultural households distributed across 12 agricultural districts during 2020–2025, incorporating 86 socioeconomic, environmental, and production-related variables. Agricultural production systems are categorized into conventional farming (960 farms), integrated resource management (720 farms), and climate-smart sustainable agriculture (720 farms). The analytical framework integrates Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), cost–benefit analysis, and multivariate regression modelling to evaluate technical efficiency, resource allocation, economic returns, and household welfare outcomes. The reported findings indicate that sustainable agricultural production systems improve average crop productivity by 24.6%, increase irrigation water-use efficiency by 31.8%, enhance fertilizer-use efficiency by 27.4%, and reduce agricultural energy consumption by 19.7% compared with conventional farming. Economic assessment reveals that average annual net farm income increases from PKR 485,000 under conventional farming to PKR 672,000 under sustainable agricultural management, representing a 38.6% improvement. Furthermore, the benefit–cost ratio increases from 1.42 to 1.89, while mean technical efficiency rises from 0.71 to 0.89. Multivariate regression analysis identifies statistically significant positive associations between sustainable agricultural adoption, farm productivity, resource efficiency, and household income (*p* < .01). Additional findings demonstrate a 22.3% improvement in rural livelihood performance and a 17.6% reduction in agricultural production costs. The study establishes an integrated economic assessment perspective demonstrating the potential of sustainable agricultural systems to strengthen agricultural competitiveness, optimize resource utilization, and enhance rural socioeconomic resilience. These findings offer policy-relevant insights for promoting sustainable agricultural investment, resource-efficient farming technologies, inclusive rural development, and long-term agricultural sustainability in developing economies.
